Modelling non-stationary tree growth responses to global warming

IN SHORT

Temperature reconstructions are key to evaluate natural climate variability and forcing. Tree-rings suffer from a recent loss of signal strength, often referred to as the divergence problem which calls into question the ability to reconstruct historical warm periods.

Divergence hypothesis cannot be tested as no tree-ring network covering the past three decades and including all age classes is available, and no forward model exists that produces maximum density chronologies and individual ontogenetic trends.
